Mirabal Sisters

Today is also the 53rd anniversary of the murder of the heroic Mirabal Sisters in the Dominican Republic. The sisters who were political dissidents of dictator Rafael Trujillo were brutally murdered by his henchmen. In their memory, the UN recognized today (Nov 25) as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Let's remember their bravery in standing up for justice.

The Hermanas Mirabal refers to four Dominican political dissidents who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. On November 25, 1960, three of the sisters were assassinated. In 1999, the sisters received recognition by theUnited Nations General Assembly, who designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in their honor.
